what  is chamber music?

Pitchstone Music has a deep focus on chamber music. But what is it exactly? Pitchstone Music Founder Rachel Roberts explains.

"Many people think that chamber music is an intimidating art form, and that you can only really enjoy it if you come from the 'right' background or education.

Well, scratch all that!

Chamber music is music that’s written for small groups. That’s all it is. It’s music that got its name from a time when it was created to be played at home in a living-room; in a ‘chamber’ rather than in a big concert-hall.

The fascinating thing about chamber music is that there are all sorts of wonderful pieces written outside the range of standard classical ensembles (like a string quartet, a duo sonata or a wind quintet).

Chamber music is a great way to listen to classical music in general because you can find something that really suits your vision of what excites you. Something that is so extraordinary and individual, so meaningful, that it feels like it’s been personally written just for you.

So don’t think about what some people might say about what chamber music should or shouldn't be. Just listen to it and love it because its great music." â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹
